Hanne Lippard
25.05 - 15.07.2018

Born in 1984 in England, Hanne Lippard grew up in Norway before settling in Berlin. Lippard has been using language as the raw material for her work for the last eight years, processing it in texts, vocal performances, sound installations and printed or three-dimensional objects.

For Ulyd, Hanne Lippard has created a series of new works that explore the social forces governing female verbal expression. After developing a mastery of the performative characteristics of language (rhythm, intonation, modulation, volume), the artist is now appropriating linguistic obscenity in relation to what is traditionally expected of female verbal expression: politeness and gentleness.

The exhibition consists of a sound installation and new textual works reinterpreting Roman curse tablets (used as an interface with the gods and for casting spells). These two ensembles have been produced especially for the exhibition and are presented on the ground floor of the building. In echo, the installation No Answer Is Also An Answer (2018), shown previously at the David Dale Gallery in Glasgow, will occupy the second exhibition room.

Ulyd is co-produced by Kunsthalle Stavanger in Norway, which will include it as part of a larger monographic exhibition next autumn. Hanne Lippard held individual exhibitions at KW, Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin in 2017 and David Dale Gallery in Glasgow in 2018. Her work can currently be seen at the group exhibition Blind Faith: Between the Visceral and the Cognitive in Contemporary Art at Haus der Kunst, Munich. Hanne Lippard has also exhibited at: SALTS, Basel; Intext, The Swedish Contemporary Art Foundation, Stockholm; Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna; Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst, Leipzig and Poesìa en Voz, Mexico City.
